Here's a little something I've been working on the last couple weeks. It is the first Ninja Turtles piece I've ever done in full color, that I remember. I probably did a few when I was a kid - I was a HUGE Turtles nut as a kid.
Oh... and I'm a Donatello. Totally. My wife is a Leonardo. We fit so well together!
I wanted to take some of the color theory stuff I'd played around with way back on my Catwoman/Black Cat piece [link] and push it farther using the things I'd learned since. I also experimented with some hand-applied skin texturing and splotching, which I think turned out alright. I've got a close-up here: [link]
This was a lot of fun, particularly bringing out the personalities. Tried to keep them feeling youthful and teenagey, which tends to get lost in a lot of treatments. This piece draws a lot from the TMNT animated film by Imagi, which I absolutely adored. IF you haven't seen it and you're a turtles fan, shame on you! [link]
The TMNT watching over The City! I love The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! T-U-R-T-L-E POWER! HA!HA!HA! I love the coloring, shading and detail.Very moody and atmospheric.I also like how you did the musculature of The Turtles,it`s not nearly as exaggerated as it has been in some of versions of The TMNT. My favorite Turtle Movies are The 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie and The Computer-Animated TMNT Movie from 2007(I aboslutely adored it,too,I think I`ve watched it a good seven, eight or nine times). Each Turtle has a slightly different expression affixed on his face but it`s all in line with the general feel of this artwork.I was a huge Turtles Fan as a kid.Funny,I`m still a huge Turtles Fan as an adult(as many others are).
I can see that you definitely drew from The 2007-TMNT Movie for influence and inspiration,I agree with GamingArtist-521,I don`t know how you feel about the 2003 Cartoon, but this reminds me of that, too.Like so many others,I have such fond childhood memories of The Turtles!I`m putting up two pictures of them in my house,if girls I bring over don`t like it,my mindset is usually:''TOUGH!''Ha!Ha! So,usually,it`s just better when I bring over people who do like that kind of stuff or at least, who don`t mind it. We`ll see what the planned upcoming new TMNT Movie will be like(I think it comes out in 2013 OR 2014,one of the two),I just hope that they won`t be aliens as it has been said that they will be.Yes,the premise of The Turtles is pretty over the top and ridiculous to begin with(which I think was part of the point when Eastman and Laird created the characters)but they weren`t aliens.Making them into Aliens Turtles from a Race of Anthropomorphic,Talking Alien Turtles would be like making them into The Biker Mice From Mars(Alien Mice from a Race of Anthropomorhpic Talking Alien Mice)-and I love The Biker Mice, too, but The TMNT aren`t The Biker Mice(though they`re similar in some ways).I hear they`re dropping The ''Teenage Mutant''-Part from the name, too,I could live with that if they`re just going to call the movie ''Ninja Turtles'' because a lot of people call them that, anyway and so do I (but everyone probably won`t like that name-changing).We`ll see how the plans for the new Ninja Turtles Movie goes,I guess.I just hope they don`t screw it up! I love your Turtles art! Pure Classic TMNT! THE HEROES IN A HALF-SHELL ROCK!
Yeah, I enjoyed the '03 cartoon pretty well. The first couple seasons were great, though it lost its way a bit over time. The Imagi CGI movie was the perfect representation of everything I love about the characters and concept, though. It was everything I'd want in a Turtles movie, and I was sad when it was revealed they wouldn't get to do a sequel.
I'm actually working on a how-to book that will include digital color. It remains to be seen how deep I get (as the book will cover a WIIIIDE array of topics) but I hope to cover digital tone pretty well.
A lot of it, though, is looking at life and recreating what you see. Particularly using light - highlights, rim-lights, back-lights - to make the character feel like they're part of the environment you've drawn.
