Superman, Superboy, and the current Supergirl (much as I don't care for the character). I really like drawing Superboy, who is just such a teen-heartthrob character that he contrasts nicely with the more classical Superman. I think of him visually as a cross between Josh Hartnett and Freddy Prinze Jr. For Kara, I just tried to capture those girls back in High School who were into sports and really athletic, but not very bright at all. Heh.

Superman, though... he kicked my butt. My hat's off to anybody who can draw a good Supes - he's one of the hardest characters to really capture that I've ever encountered.

I am still grieving for Conner... And yes I now what you mean when you say its hard to capture the Superman "look". I still think you did a great job.

I disagree with your opinion of Supergirl... Reading some of the recent issues it seems like the writers are really showing what she's made of... Being the "new" Supergirl even though she is the real one... its enough to mess anybody up, and she's hadling it prettywell...

But again that's my opinion

I like the current artist's take, and I've only really skimmed recent issues, but from that God-awful introductory arc in Superman/Batman to the majority of her appearances since, she's been portrayed as selfish, whiny, immature and mean. Most of her stories have focused on her fighting a super-chick of the month, and she's had too many origin stories for a character only a couple years old. Whether or not the character has potential, she's been written terribly, and handled poorly by pretty much everybody who's taken a crack at her. I'm not against Supergirl, just the way they've done THIS Supergirl.

Technicality! But a great catch - hadn't even thought of her, sadly. Now I feel bad! :D

You could always do another one that has her in it

Well I think Conner Kent looks freaking awesome. The others are done well, as well. Don't get yourself down too much it is always hard to wrap your head around the iconic characters like Superman because of the lack of relatability. Not a big fan of the new Supergirl myself. I would take the Linda Danvers merged with Matrix supergirl anyday.

Oh, it isn't the relatability. I think too many people give Supes a hard time about being 'relatable.' When written well, I find he's as relatable as anybody else. Most times, people just get too caught up on how much power he has and write him off.

What's hard with Superman is catching his iconic 'look.' He's strong, but not overly muscular; really handsome, but not ';pretty'; tough but not rugged; stern but not mean; regal but still humble; radiates power and presence without being too angelic or inhuman... it's hard to draw a face that captures all of that at once.

But thanks for the Connor compliment. He's MUCH easier to draw! And I, too, prefer Linda Danvers. The current Supergirl is completly superfluous and redundant, without being at all interesting in her own right.

Well I agree with you on Superman, but all too often when you pick up JLA or what have you he is written very much like he believes more in his power being absolute then in his skills. So this gives a lot of people the suggestion of a god like being. Now I have been a Superman fan since I was very young, and with a lot of the writing in the last five years I have found that people have instead of giving him stronger villains have simply depowered him or made him seem like an over powered jerk. I mean if you think about the recent mind control by Maxwell Lord over Superman, and then think back to the god like being Dominus he faced after the Millenium Giants storyline, when he first went back to his old powers, you would know he has some defense against a mental attack. None the less the writers seem only interested in their own stories and not continuity.

As for Conner he is an awesome character, and I plan on drawing him a bit myself in the near future if only to show my support for his return. Linda was an awesome Supergirl because of her imperfections. This new one seems to be trying to touch on too many fan boy trips. I mean the crystalline projections from her body recently seemed like something straight out of Witchblade. Just me though.

Now, I’d say that the continually escalating power levels of Superman foes is part of the problem with the character. It’s like the Superman Returns movie-- he valiantly pushes himself to the brink to lift a mountain of Kryptonite and hurl it into the sun. Okay, cool… but how the frak do you top THAT?! Will it be a continent of Kryptonite next? A planet?! You’re better off reducing his power levels to merely unbelievably freaking powerful than to be caught in an endless loop of ever-increasing villain power. It’s “Dragonball Z syndrome” - once you blow up that much of the planet without breaking a sweat, people stop believing anything is a challenge, anymore.

Personally, I loved the Max Lord stuff. It was a great moment, as was the Wonder Woman bit that it included. Tons of emotion, tons of character, and while I thought pretty much everything in Infinite Crisis and all the works that have come since have been crap on a stick, that particular storyline was quite gripping for me. But then, I prefer my Superman to have more of an emphasis on the MAN and less on the SUPER, so take that for what it’s worth.

Though I’m definitely not a fan of the ‘weeping little girl in the fetal position’ Superman stuff you see sometimes, either.

And if Connor comes back, I’ll be happy, but it’ll just be one more meaningless death/return story that hurts characters and books without providing anything of substance in return.
