Rainbow in the Dark pg 6-7 by AdamWithers Rainbow in the Dark pg 6-7 by AdamWithers
Preview pages from Rainbow in the Dark #1, a bohemian fairy-tale about freedom, love, and what it means to be alive. (Download for full, readable size)

Because of the style and look of how this comic is being done, we decided that the only way to really give people a taste of what we have in store is to just show the opening sequence in its entirety and let people judge for themselves. Any single image out of context wouldn't be good enough - it's the whole package that makes the book what it is.

So here is a strip containing the first 7 pages of story from the first issue. There's a ton more that happens after this, so when the comic goes on sale (digital release: July 19th, paper issues debut at SDCC) if you think this looks cool, you'll have to read the rest and see more of the awesome.

As a note: There are three things I hate drawing above all else - cars, super-detailed tech stuff, and monotonous, repetitive goon-squads. So, naturally, we built an entire series around people who drive crazy cars, shoot crazy-tech guns, and fight hordes of repetitive monsters. While there are justifiable in-story reasons that make these things necessary (and cool), it was still a huge pain to illustrate.

We're really excited, too. The whole way along we've known this was a neat idea, but actually making it happen is something you can never count on, you know? But now it's real, it's happening, and we're going to get to see it through. That's really exhilarating.

And is this at all a tribute to Dio?

Not really, no. Many will suggest so, but while the book has a sort of musical feeling to it and we reference music a lot, it has nothing at all to do with Dio, Black Sabbath, or Rainbow (the band).

Woah! This is freaking amazing I love it! I really found the idea intreging when I talked to guys at JAFAX but now I really must read more! I love the lay out and the heavy monochrome till things really start to happen and it explodes into color. I can't wait to see what is next!

Ink drops in water on an overlay layer, then blended in with layer masks until it looks like all the monsters are trailing ink.

The idea is to make it feel like they're being partly conjured out of the air as they charge.

Totally unintentional if true. We just wanted something very generic Americana, but modern at the same time. The one thing we absolutely did NOT want was for the gray city to feel too 1950's America. We wanted it to feel like it could be any metropolitan area today - timeless, you know?

Yes. I mean, it looks modern, very real world, but it also is such an iconic style, you know?

That's why we wanted to show the whole set of pages, full text and all. If we just showed pieces out of context, we were SURE people would jump on the Pleasantville thing-- nevermind that the characters are riding around in tricked out cars and shooting crazy monsters with big guns.

I would guess that it's more a metaphor for people not really seeing the life and world around them because they're too caught up in the mundane day-to-day. And they've gotta be reeeeally oblivious to miss those cars cruising around. And the guns. And the monsters. ;)

You'll just have to wait and see. We're certainly chock-a-block with metaphors and analogies in this thing. :)
